Discover our Story: Why We Are Unique

Grappling refers to martial arts maneuvers and techniques that involve grabbing an opponent. It is incorporated into most combat sports and martial arts, such as judo, jiujitsu, sambo, and wrestling. Grappling typically involves engaging in hand-to-hand combat and is often associated with ground fighting, a common tactic in Brazilian jiujitsu. While grappling includes various forms of wrestling, there are distinct differences between grappling, particularly ground fighting arts like jiujitsu, and modern freestyle wrestling.

Difference Between Grappling and Wrestling

There are two major differences between grappling, when it refers to ground fighting, and freestyle wrestling: the presence of submissions and the strategy of fighting.

Regarding Submissions

Grappling
In grappling, you can use submission holds, such as choke holds or arm bars, to cause extreme pain or a fear of injury, forcing your opponent to submit and lose the match.
Wrestling
In wrestling, submissions are not allowed. To win a match, you must score more points than your opponent using maneuvers such as takedowns, reversals, escapes, and near-falls, or pin your opponent by forcing both shoulder blades to touch the mat.

Regarding Strategy

Grappling
In grappling, being underneath your opponent and lying on your back can be advantageous. You can use your legs to hold your opponent and perform submission holds without being in a vulnerable position. Conversely, being on top or on your hands and knees can make you susceptible to submission holds and moves that are not allowed in wrestling.
Wrestling
In wrestling, the top position is ideal for controlling and eventually pinning an opponent. Wrestlers aim to avoid being on their backs, as it makes them susceptible to being pinned.

Wrestling

Wrestling is an ancient martial art that has evolved into a globally practiced sport. While numerous forms of wrestling exist, the common rule is that punching and kicking are not allowed. The rules and scoring systems vary across different regional variations. Generally, bouts are won by forcing an opponent to submit through a painful joint lock or choke hold, pushing them out of the ring, or pinning their shoulders to the ground.

Submission Wrestling/Grappling

Unlike other forms of wrestling, submission wrestling matches are won by forcing a submission, typically through the successful application of a painful joint lock or choke. Submission wrestling bouts begin in a standing position but quickly descend to the mat as each wrestler seeks to gain a superior position to apply a lock or choke. The techniques of submission wrestling are integral to mixed martial arts and form the backbone of grappling disciplines like Brazilian jiujitsu, Japanese shooto, and Greek pankration, considered the oldest martial art in the world.
